- Do not combine terms with AND OR NOT - instead, use Keyword search as shown in the examples below, or else use Advanced Search

Limits

- You may limit your search to a certain sub-collection, type of material, publication date, etc.
- Quick Limits displays only the most frequently chosen limits; Set Search Limits displays your complete limit options
- Limits can only be used with Keyword and Title searches
- Search limits will remain in effect until you specifically clear them or until you close your browser

Keyword

- Use quotes to search phrases: "navajo creation myth"
- Use + to mark essential terms:
+indian +art = (indian AND art) +indian art = (indian AND/OR art)
- Use ! to exclude terms: "indian women" !pocahontas = ("indian women" NOT pocahontas)
- Use ? to truncate: archeolog? = archeology, archeological, etc.
- Terms not enclosed in quotes will be combined with an OR operator unless qualified by ! or +

Title

- Enter the beginning of the title, stopping at any point: journals of lewis and cl retrieves journals of lewis and clark
- Omit initial articles (a, an, the, der, la, los...)
- Title search also retrieves periodical titles (journals, magazines, newspapers)

Author

- For organization names, enter normal word order, stopping at any point: Association on American Indian Affairs
- An "author" may be either a person, organization, government body, artist, performer, or any other name responsible for creating the work
